Katarina Witt started skating at age five. It was not long before her talents became apparent, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she was accepted into a school specifically for kids who have athletic talents. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt captured the eyes of everyone and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic victory Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating gold medal at Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. In a tighter competition the following year, Witt was awarded the medal. The free skater was unable to win, but she won the gold medal in the mandatory figures and her program was short. Witt was the first female to win in both women's and men's figure-skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win an award. Witt's entry into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame was held in 1995.
